Build a list of reporters who cover a beat

MIT Technology Review tested Manus with three tasks, among them a list of reporters covering China tech. The first list had only five names, and the agent admitted it had cut corners to save time. After being told to be thorough, it returned a list of 30 reporters with outlet and notable work, downloadable as Word or Excel. Paywalls and captchas still blocked it several times along the way.

What was done

MIT Technology Review tested Manus with three tasks, among them a list of reporters covering China tech. The first list had only five names, and the agent admitted it had cut corners to save time. After being told to be thorough, it returned a list of 30 reporters with outlet and notable work, downloadable as Word or Excel. Paywalls and captchas still blocked it several times along the way.

How to do it

  1. Paste the prompt into the tool, and replace the text in brackets with your own.
  2. Read the answer through. Do not send, delete or publish anything until you have seen it yourself.
  3. Check the original before you trust a figure, a name or a date.

Try it with Manus

Make a list of [number] reporters who cover [topic] in [country or region]. For each: name, current outlet, two recent stories with links and where you found the information. Check that the employer is still correct today. Show me the first five before you continue, and tell me if a paywall stops you. You are done when the list is saved as [format] and every row has sources.

Replace text in brackets with your own.

  • Use a code editor to keep your notes in order

Beatriz uses Cursor for more than code. Cursor has access to her whole Obsidian vault and checks whether templates and frontmatter match across notes, suggests links and tags and finds gaps in her knowledge graph. It also writes a daily done note covering work she did with agents outside Obsidian, and answers questions about her notes. She gives no numbers, and the post reads more like a recipe than a report.

  • Combine many spreadsheet tabs into one KPI dashboard

Michael Crist at ShineOn had a marketing tracker with 12 tabs, one per team member, and up to 47 columns. He uploaded it to Claude Cowork and asked for a colour coded KPI dashboard. Cowork read the tabs, picked the key metrics, asked for browser access and built it in a new tab of the live sheet. It took 20 minutes against an estimated 4 to 6 hours by hand, but he does not say how the figures were checked.

  • Build a sourced slide deck from a short brief

Consultant Gonçalo Perdigão tested Manus Slides with a deliberately vague brief: a deck on generative AI and trends for 2025, accurate and sourced, in UK English. Manus made a plan, pulled material from sources such as Microsoft and Morgan Stanley and built 16 slides with a consistent design. He calls it the best slide builder he has tried, but the figures in the deck should still be checked against the sources.
