Prepare your tax return before you open Skatteetaten

Use ChatGPT to build a checklist from your situation before you open the tax return. The figures come from Skatteetaten, not from the model.

Have the documents ready, and read the answer critically before you use it.

This is a way of working from the editors, not advice from Skatteetaten, NAV, Altinn or an accountant. Check figures, deadlines and decisions against the original.

How to do it

  1. 1

Gather what you already have: a payslip, annual statements from your bank and insurer, and receipts for things like a union fee or commuting. Do not paste your national identity number or account number.

  2. 2

Describe your situation briefly: employee, student, pensioner, home, children, or a sole proprietorship. Ask for a checklist, not a finished tax-return answer.

  3. 3

Ask the assistant to explain each item in everyday words, and which documents usually support it. Ask it to mark anything it is unsure about.

  4. 4

Open the tax return on skatteetaten.no and go through the list item by item. Where something is pre-filled, check it against your papers.

  5. 5

Write down what you need to ask Skatteetaten or an accountant. Use the deadline printed on your tax return, not a date the model suggests.

Example prompt

Example prompt

I am about to review my Norwegian tax return on skatteetaten.no. I am an employee, I live in a home I own, and I pay a union fee. I do not have a sole proprietorship.

Write a checklist of items that are usual to check in that situation. For each item: what I should look for, which document I should have in front of me, and what I should not guess.

Do not invent amounts, rates or deadlines. If something needs a lookup at Skatteetaten, write «check skatteetaten.no» instead of a number.
